Scope

Design & Build

The new central dining and cooking facility of BMW Manufacturing Hungary—the Northwestern Canteen—has been completed, serving the company's more than seven thousand employees in shifts. DVM Group carried out the full design and construction of the 3,000 m² gross building, from concept to completion, including detailed interior design plans and compliance with strict BMW standards and comprehensive BIM requirements.

BIM Innovation and Industrial Challenges: One of the greatest challenges was creating a space within the factory's industrial environment capable of both fast, efficient service for a large number of employees and fostering a sense of community. DVM Group's team had to meet BMW's extremely detailed BIM requirements. Laser scanning was performed at every key construction phase to ensure full accuracy of the as-built model—resulting in the first as-built BIM model in DVM Group's history that allows the operator to centrally maintain every piece of equipment based on automatic feedback.

Natural Light and Human-Scale Environment: DVM Group's designs placed special emphasis on natural light, openness, and a human-scale atmosphere. An elegantly high interior was created relative to the restaurant's footprint, with skylights providing natural light and floor-to-ceiling glass creating generous visual connections with the outdoors. The climbing-plant-clad façade and warm-toned interior bring the experience of connecting with nature back into mealtimes.

Acoustics and Flexible Space Use: Functionality and acoustic comfort played equally important roles in the interior design. Natural wood slats and an acoustic suspended ceiling create a calm, noise-free environment. The flexibly configurable furnishing allows the space to host events alongside daily dining.

Sustainable Solutions: The building employs numerous innovative environmental solutions. Energy efficiency is ensured by a heat-recovery ventilation system, zoned LED lighting, and air-source heat pump heating and cooling. Structural engineers optimised concrete and steel use with a 6×12-metre grid that eliminated the need for reinforced piling. The completed Northwestern Canteen is not only a key facility for BMW's Debrecen plant but also an exemplary project demonstrating how a humane community building can be created in a large-scale industrial environment. The investment was realised as a project of national economic importance.
